Lottery / prize scam
A message says you won a prize or lottery you never entered, but you must pay a fee or give details to “release” it.
Informational only — not legal or financial advice.
How it works
- You're told you won money, a phone, or a prize.
- To claim it, you must pay a “fee,” “tax,” or give bank details.
- The prize never comes; the fees and data are the real goal.
Red flags
- Winning something you never entered.
- Any fee or payment required to receive a prize.
- Requests for bank or ID details to “verify” you.
What to do
- Delete it — a real prize never requires an up-front fee.
- Check with the supposed organizer through official channels.
- Be extra wary if it arrived by SMS, email, or social media.
What NOT to do
- Do not pay any fee or tax to claim a prize.
- Do not share bank, card, or ID details to “claim” winnings.
